What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic modality that utilizes specific protocols to help individuals process anxieties, traumas, and grief. During EMDR sessions, clients briefly focus on a trauma memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as tapping or eye movements). This dual focus is associated with a reduction in triggering emotions and trauma memories.

As an integrative approach, EMDR involves less talk therapy than traditional psychotherapy modalities. The use of bilateral stimulation helps reprogram the emotional response to activating events. The length of treatment varies by individual, depending on the impact of the trauma memory on the mind and body. For more information, visit emdria.org.

Benefits of EMDR:

  • Reduction of Anxiety and Panic Disorders: Experience relief from overwhelming feelings of fear and panic.

  • Improved Emotional Regulation: Gain better control over your emotions and reactions.

  • Enhanced Positive Self-Perception: Increase your sense of self-worth and positive beliefs about yourself.

  • Relief from Fears and Phobias: Reduce the intensity of fears and phobias that may be holding you back.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR has 3 stages and here’s what you can expect:

Assessment

We first talk about your goals for EMDR. Then we discuss your prior experience with therapy and adverse life events, your current support system, and coping skills.

EMDR: The Reprocessing Phase

Next, we’ll start preparing by having you learn some new coping skills that will help in your EMDR journey. We will process the memories, emotions, thoughts, that you want relief from. You will engage in a type of bilateral stimulation of your choice to process.

Integration

Lastly, we work towards integrating your new emotions, thoughts, and memories.

Common questions about EMDR therapy

  • EMDR has a standard protocol where you are asked certain questions to identify the negative experiences, as well as your desired outcome. You will engage in short sets of bilateral stimulation (either through eye movement or tapping). You’ll share your experience and any changes that occur during the set —this is were the brain and body are at work reprocessing. The processing continues when you experience decreased levels of disturbance of the event you are working on, and you experience higher levels of positive thoughts and affect.
