What is Somatic Experiencing?

Recent research has shown us that trauma and stress lives and can get stuck in the body. If not attended to properly, we are susceptible to chronic illnesses and diseases that impact our overall wellbeing and relationships. Somatic Experiencing is a simple and slow body-led approach to heal stuck self protection patterns due to unresolved experiences in order to feel more nervous system regulation to feel more ease, joy, and connection inside and around you.

How does Somatic Experiencing

Sessions Work?

Somatic Experiencing is unlike other type of therapy, in that it follows your unique nervous system pattern, it’s slow, and involves moments of quietness to allow the body to integrate. Each session is different.

Here’s what you can expect:

Pre-work: The Intake Assessment

After applying, we meet for the first intake session, where we get clear on what your are experiencing (your nervous system state) and your goals. We also discuss your history, support system, and ways you’ve been coping. I provide recommendations and answer your questions.

We set the foundation for supporting your nervous system stabalization with tools tailored to your needs. There’s a lot of noticing, pausing, and less talking.

Note: We can be our own blind-spots, and having a trained somatic practitioner to slowly interrupt old stress and trauma patterns to heal is an important step in stress and trauma resolution. In order for you nervous system to truly heal long-term, it can take several sessions of slow body work to begin to see changes.

Resourcing Phase

Slow Trauma and Stress Resolution

We begin to get curious about challenging moments you would like to process. We engage with different channels in our physiology for the reprocessing. There’s a lot of pausing and noticing, and shifting to your resources, to build capacity. Here, the focus is on how your body speaks to you, on what it’s ready to release and integrate.

Lastly, we work towards integrating your new emotions, thoughts, and memories. This may look like quiet resting.

Common questions about Somatic Experiencing

  • Somatic Experiencing is a slow process unique to your nervous system. I use Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal tools, to teach you about your nervous system and give you the tools for regulation. With longer term clients, I also incorporate Internal Family Systems-Informed, so you identify the parts keeping you stuck in survival mode, so you teach them a new way of being, feeling more self-compassion and confidence.

  • Yes, you can do Somatic Experiencing online. Many people like to be in their home where they feel safe and supportive to engage in SE sessions.

  • During the intake assessment, we get clarity on what you want to process, your current coping skills, and support systems.

    However, if you are looking for a faster treatment, than it may not be a good fit for you yet, and it’s best to use other modalities.

    You can take your time to prepare your mind and body in the future to engage SE work.

  • Somatic Experiencing is safe when administered by a trained provider. Like many therapy modalities, SE may lead to emotional distress, re-traumatization or dissociation episodes. It’s important to let you provider know to tailor your treatment plan.

  • You can apply first, and will contact you within 24-48 hours during Monday through Thursday. It’s important that you feel comfortable with me, so that you get the most of Somatic Experiencing. If we are not a good fit, I will provide you with referrals to other trained providers.

    If we are a good fit, the first session will be an intake.
