What is EMDR?
When we go through something painful, stressful, or scary, our brains and bodies can have a hard time making sense of the experience. We can get stuck and can impact the way we think, feel, and act.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that can help feel better after traumatic, scary, upsetting, or painful experiences. It helps to process emotions like worry, anxiety, sadness, anger, and unhelpful thoughts or memories from the past. It can also help with uncomfortable body sensations too.
During EMDR sessions, clients briefly focus on a memory while engaging in back-and-forth movements to help your brain and body get unstuck.
EMDR involves less talk therapy than traditional therapy modalities. The use of bilateral stimulation helps reprogram the emotional response to activating events. The length of treatment varies by individual, depending on the impact of the trauma memory on the mind and body.

How I do EMDR
Differently
Traditional EMDR has specific protocols that trained therapists follow and it may not work for everyone.
I use a holistic approach to EMDR, where we incorporate more a body-led approach and include parts work or Internal Family Systems-Informed. This allows to go at the rhythm of the person nervous system capacity and get curious of the parts still protecting them from shifting to new patterns.
This is great for:
People who are already overwhelmed and anxious about therapy but want a change
People who desire a mind and body approach
People who want a slower pace
People experiencing grief
People who have tried traditional EMDR but want to experience a slower and sustainable approach
How does EMDR work?
EMDR specific protocol has 8 phases. To prepare we begin by:
Assessment
We first talk about your goals for EMDR. Then we discuss your prior experience with therapy and adverse life events, your current support system, and coping skills.
EMDR:
Next, we’ll start preparing by having you learn some new mind and body coping skills that will help in your EMDR journey.
Then, we will process the memories, emotions, thoughts, that you want relief from. You will engage in back-and-forth movements (e.g. eye movement, tapping, bi-lateral music, etc.) to help get some of the stress out of the mind and body.
Once that is completed, we focus on strengthening the positive and healthy thoughts so that whenever you think of the event in the future, you wont’ feel as stressed out. Lastly, we make sure that everything has been released, and spend more time to help it get out, if there’s still left.
Integration
Lastly, we work towards integrating your new emotions, thoughts, and memories.

Common questions about EMDR therapy
-
EMDR has a standard protocol where you are asked certain questions to identify the negative experiences, as well as your desired outcome. You will engage in short sets of bilateral stimulation (either through eye movement or tapping). You’ll share your experience and any changes that occur during the set —this is were the brain and body are at work reprocessing. The processing continues when you experience decreased levels of disturbance of the event you are working on, and you experience higher levels of positive thoughts and affect.

However, if you experience severe panic attacks and dissociation, it may not be a good fit yet, and it’s best to use other gentle modalities. You can take your time to prepare your mind and body in the future to engage EMDR.
